"Undying Love" - a Chor Lau Heung 1984 MV

"Undying Love" - a Chor Lau Heung 1984 MV from Icha74 on Vimeo.

Months ago I listened to "Undying Love" (情義兩心堅), one of the OST of the Return of Condor Heroes (ROCH) 1983 sung by the lovely Teresa Cheung. I didn't realise at first that it was the ROCH OST, for I listened to an MV for The Foundation 1984 (a beautiful but saaaad MV at that). When I realised that it was the ROCH OST, and also the meaning of the lyrics, I totally fell in love with the song. Recently, I thought it would be nice to have a Chor Lau Heung MV with this song, particularly because the meaning of the song was actually uplifting, and hence rather suits the love story between Chor Lau Heung and Song Siu Ching. Plus, I have subconsciously associated this song with sadness because my recent re-introduction of this song was through a (beautiful but) tragic MV of The Foundation. Hence, consider this clearing and replacing my sad palate for a more cheerful interpretation of the song (as it should be, perhaps).

I found the lyrics from MojimI adapted the translation from YouTuber Guo Jing (his translation can be found here). I obtained the Jyutping Cantonese romanisation using this site. Since I don't speak Cantonese or read traditional Chinese characters (or simplified characters for that matter), I'm bound to make a lot of mistakes, so correct me when you spot any mistakes.

Translation is below the break. I uploaded the MV to both Vimeo and Dailymotion. The beautiful magnolia paintings were painted by Ella Saridi from Suibokuga Etsy. Hope you like it. And pay attention to min 1:40 when Chor tai-gor tried to catch Siu Ching but the girl kept running to Fell Cut. Chor's helpless expression as he turned to Wu Tit Fa was priceless!!

Undying Love 情義兩心堅 lyrics
(Cing ji loeng sam gin)

Originally performed by Teresa Cheung

情若真 不必相見恨晚
Cing joek zan bat bit soeng gin han maan
If love is true, there is no regret
見到一眼再不慨歎
Gin dou jat ngaan zoi bat koi taan
So long as we can see each other
情義似水逝去 此心托飛雁
Cing ji ci seoi sai heoi ci sam tok fei ngaan
Love runs like water, this heart is like a flying bird
遠勝孤單在世間
Jyun sing gu daan zoi sai gaan
Alone in the world

情若真 不必驚怕聚散
Cing joek zan bat bit ging paa zeoi saan
If love is true, we fear no separation
變化轉瞬也應見慣
Bin faa zyun seon jaa jing jin gwaan
Love is impervious to shifting changes
誰願去揮慧劍 此心托飛雁
Seoi jyun heoi fai wai gim ci sam tok fei ngaan
Who would renounce love, love is like the swan
縱隔千山亦無間
Zung gaak cin saan jik mou gaan
Mountains are no obstacles

Reff:
愛比朝露 未怕短暫
Ngoi bei ciu lau mei paa dyun zaam
Love is like the morning dew, a moment can be eternity
存在兩心堅 情不會淡
Cyun zoi loeng sam gin cing fau wui daam
Our undying love will never waver
別去已經難 重會更艱難
Bit heoi ji ging naan cung wui gang gaan naan
It’s so hard to separate, but even harder to reunite and see each other
愛火於心間 不冷
Ngoi fo jyu sam gaan bat laang
The fire of my love will never subside

情若真 不必苦惱自歎
Cing joek zan bat bit fu nou zi taan
If love is true, you don’t have to worry so much
縱已失去也可再挽
Zung ji sat heoi jaa ho zoi waan
Even though you lose it, you can still bring it back
情緣至今未冷 此心托飛雁
Cing jyun zi gam mei laang ci sam tok fei ngaan
This love has not turned cold, this heart is like a flying bird
那怕悲歡何妨聚散
Naa paa bei fun ho fong zeoi saan
We need not worry about happiness or sadness
Or being separated or together

Reff:

愛比朝露 未怕短暫
Ngoi bei ciu lou mei paa dyun zaam
Love is like the morning dew, a moment can be eternity
存在兩心堅 情不會淡

My goodness, this song and MV is so beautiful Icha! Yes, this son was so sad but beautiful for The Foundation MV on YouTube. Speaking of The Foundation, I have been rewatching it because it has been a while. I watched it and I love the interactions of Barbara and Michael! I also remembered Lok Wan and how Sai Man loved her so much as his little sister. It made me tear up so much when she left. Anyways, I was wondering if you had the time (maybe by this month or May or anytime!) to somehow make a fanfiction. My idea was that Sik Sik of course already passed away and everything Sai Man did wrong was over and Lok Wan left. Then, maybe like 3, 4 years later, when Sai Man (the emperor) was visiting a small and poor village. Then, he found Lok Wan somehow. How would you think Sai Man would react and how would Lok Wan react?

OMG, you brave soul, rewatching The Foundation again! But I agree that it's actually a beautiful series. It's succinct, clear and waste no time in unnecessary scenes. Also, I love it that Barbara played very different character to her LOCH Wong Yung, for it showed how versatile she actually was. And I love it that Michael once again played a grey character, but not evil per se, unlike Yeung Hong. When a character is full of mistakes but we still root for him/her, it shows how good the actor/actress actually is.

I LOVE your fanfiction idea about LSM and Lok Wan!! I'm off for a holiday next weekend, and I will only bring my iPad with me. But I can definitely start writing the fanfiction during my holiday. Thanks a lot for the prompt!!

You are definitely welcome! I actually think that I have to thank you Icha for making these great pieces of writing! I just thought that this fanfiction between Lok Wan and her Yi Gor would be wonderful because I cried when Sai Man read her letter. I really wanted to see how Lok Wan and Sai Man would turn out and what would happen. Because I really wanted Sai Man and Lok Wan to be happy. I remember myself watching all of the Lok Wan and Sai Man scenes where they were so funny and cute together as brother and sister. I honestly think that Sai Man loved his only sister and it broke him so much because she left. I also think that the timeframe probably should be 1 or 2 years (3 years at most). I think that it would keep their age and the emotion they had still constant. I would love to read the fanfiction Icha!

I cried too when LSM found and read LW's letter. It was really sad. He really loved her (and he of course loved Sik Sik as well). I love LSM-LLW interactions too; I think LSM was an adorable brother, and I wish (we all wish) that he wasn't tempted by the throne, despite for the 'right' reason for the people... sigh...

What is your favourite Sai Man/Lok Wan scene? Mine would be the dinner scene with Kong Fung and Sik Sik where Sai Man told them not to eat LW's dishes...

Really I have to leave a comment, Icha, that this is awaesome, the song and the scenes. You know, I got to watch CLH first when I was 13 and have fallen for MB since then… Nothing can replace MB in my mind, my heart. Thank you Icha. Love your work. Gonna have a nice dream about MB again now… :)

Thanks a lot, Sandy! I think you're either in Europe or North America, so you must still be sleeping now. Have a sweet dream...

oh, another Vietnamese friend! Yay! So, since I'm in Australia (an Indonesian tho), we're almost in the same time zone then. I might be about 3 hours ahead of you.

Tammy, I hope you get this message. I've been working on the fanfiction of Li Sai Man and Li Lok Wan. I should be able to finish it next week. It's just this weekend I want to post at least one article about Barbara in commemoration of her unfortunate passing... and I also have a week of workshop. So, I just want to say that the fanfiction is getting there... I just need a bit more time. Sorry about the delay, my dear friend, and I hope all is well with you!

Tammy, it's been too long, but I finally posted the LSM and Lok Wan fanfiction here:
